ENERGY ENGINEERING FRAMEWORK

RMS provides a full-range of energy engineering and program management services to ensure our clients deliver a well-balanced and cost-effective portfolio. Our core competencies cover most of the integrated demand side management (IDSM) framework.

This includes conducting engineering audits, providing engineering energy savings calculations of electric, gas and water measures, assessing emerging technologies and systems, performing studies to support utility program attribution efforts in enhancing building and appliance standards, managing utility energy efficiency programs, educating customers in obtaining incentives and reducing operating costs, and generating engineering workpapers.

ENERGY AUDITS

An energy audit typically consists of a building walk-through to identify energy saving opportunities, calculations, and a cost analysis to show the benefit of implementing identified measures.

RMS has the skill-set and experience to conduct ASHRAE level energy audits and help customers understand savings opportunities and other operational benefits. This experience includes performing an array of technical audits, which involves metering energized electric panels and equipment for compressed air, lighting, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.

ENERGY SAVINGS CALCULATIONS

ELECTRIC, WATER AND GAS SAVINGS

Once electric, gas and/or water energy efficient opportunities have been identified, calculations and/or simulations help determine the estimated level of energy savings that can be expected from implementing these measures. Calculations and the associated cost analysis are important pieces in justifying the capital investment to management.

RMS supports the utilities in verifying that these energy savings calculations withstand regulatory and programmatic requirements by using independent professional judgment and a transparent and technically robust process to review and issue sound technical recommendations and solutions.

Emerging Technology Assessments

LAB AND FIELD MEASUREMENT & VERIFICATION

Emerging Technology Assessments aim to achieve California’s energy-reduction goals by screening potential technologies, assessing them to validate performance and customer acceptance, performing in-situ demonstrations and recommending the proven technologies for customer education and utility rebate programs.

An emerging technology assessment can include lab or field measurement and verification to determine actual energy savings, which is an important factor to support participation in utility energy efficiency incentive or rebate programs.

RMS is intimately familiar with and versed in the scientific rigor requirements needed to successfully assess, accelerate and transition emerging technologies are adopted by customers and mainstream utility rebate and incentive programs.

CODES AND STANDARDS ENHANCEMENT STUDIES (CASE)

CASE STUDIES

Codes and Standards Enhancement (CASE) studies for energy efficiency improvements are performed for promising design practices and technologies and are presented to standards and code-setting bodies.

RMS supports the Codes and Standards program by managing CASE studies and associated activities that offer expert testimony to promote standards and best practices in energy efficiency. The RMS team maintains strategic relationships with regulatory stakeholders, industry leaders, government agencies, academia, trade alliances and other Energy Allies to ensure attribution efforts are accounted for in enhancing building codes and appliance standards.

MANAGING UTILITY ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMS

REBATES & INCENTIVES

The successful management of utility energy efficiency programs plays a key role in achieving California's Long-Term Energy Efficient Strategic Goals.

RMS has deep experience and expertise in cost-effectively managing utility incentive programs where regulatory and compliance activities are balanced with customer satisfaction goals.

SAVING MONEY AND ENERGY THROUGH EDUCATION

CUSTOMER EDUCATION

Utilities are concerned with providing safe, reliable and affordable energy to its customers. To address this concern, RMS educates utility customers on how they can save energy and money on their bills and quickly navigate through the regulatory application process, so utilities maintain a good rapport with its customers and help them stay competitive.

The RMS supports and educates both residential and non-residential business customers understand complex building simulation software outputs and fundamental engineering calculations to aid customers in making economically viable business decisions relating to reducing energy costs.

ENGINEERING WORKPAPER DEVELOPMENT

WORKPAPERS

Workpapers document the data, methods, and rationale used to develop energy savings estimates. Utilities create workpapers to substantiate energy saving claims for a given technology that when implemented, result in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding the cost of constructing power plants and associated infrastructure.

RMS has more than a decade worth of experience overseeing the development, design, and execution of engineering workpapers for all of California's energy efficiency programs in order to meet investor-owned utility shareholder performance goals, metrics and directives required by the CPUC.
